HEALING THROUGH BLACK MUSIC


With Kayla Breelove, a Clinical Traumatologist from "Breelove Wellness" will focus on deep healing and resilience building through the arts. Together with Kinetic 9 and Dom Pachino, members of the Wu-Tang Killa Beez - Killarmy will explore how complex trauma and artistic expression intersect for communal healing, and engage in an intimate discussion to analyze their lyrics and reshape personal and collective narratives.

Recap and Reflection- Participants will get to share their perception of art and healing

Deeper Dive into Trauma and Artistry- Complex Trauma: Exploring the layers of trauma beyond the personal—looking at systemic and cultural dimensions

The Power of Narrative in Healing- Rewriting the Script: Techniques for re authoring one’s narrative from a place of empowerment- Wu-Tang’s Wisdom: Analyzing specific lyrics from Wu-Tang Killa Beez that showcase narrative reshaping and empowerment.

U-BAS Artists

The U-BAS is a new organization with the goal of creating a centralized body for producers, directors, actors, filmmakers, musicians, theatre creators, visual artists and writers to develop their skills and gain credibility and work opportunities in the Canadian Arts / Creative Industries sector. The U-BAS will provide a range of services and resources to its members, including access to industry professionals, networking opportunities, state-of-the-art training facilities, broadcast and distribution channels, a production studio and development workshops, as well as representation for contract negotiations.

Black Playwrights CirCle

(Collaboration with Charles Taylor Theatre Media & Arts)

We are excited to present the 1st Annual Black Theatre Festival at the Light House Arts Centre during the celebration of the 1st Annual UBAS Block Party!

On August 6, 2023, the festival will showcase 7 emerging Black playwrights and will be filmed to be live streamed.

In addition, attendees will enjoy special music from the original musical “Love, Peace and Hairgrease”, written by Tara Taylor, nominated for “Outstanding Production” at the Robert Merritt Awards; performed by Kailin Glasgow, Jupiter Reign and Anthony Bryan.

"BLack above the line" 

(Creative Industries Mentorship training program)

Union of Black Artists Society (UBAS) members, instructor, Christopher Bautista of Matista Media, and Tara Taylor. Festival Director of The Emerging Lens Cultural Film Festival, had a successfully executed pilot project in the summer/fall of 2022 under her employment with Culture Link CIC. The “Breaking Through the Screens” technical training program introduced participants to the filmmaking process, with a focus on production, music scoring, animation and acting. Participants learned the theory and practice of using and operating the equipment used by film professionals during each stage of filmmaking. By completion, participants understood how a film is made, they also learned how to work together as a team to complete a film and capture the director’s vision on film.
